Brazil detects first case of coronavirus variant found for the first time in India

(CNN) – The first official case of the coronavirus variant found for the first time in India (B.1.617.2) has already been detected in Brazil, Maranhao State Health Secretary Carlos Lula reported on Thursday.

Six crew members of the ship Shandong da Zhi, traveling from South Africa, tested positive for variant B.1.617.2. One of the crew is being treated at a private hospital in Sao Luis, the capital of Maranhao state. According to the secretary, another 14 crew members are infected with covid-19 and remain on the ship, two with mild symptoms and 12 asymptomatic. Another nine passengers were not diagnosed with coronavirus.
