Last week, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) issued an alert regarding one of the most widely used drugs for blood pressure control, Enalapril Alter 20mg, manufactured by Toll Manufacturing Services. This alert involved the withdrawal of all the units of the only affected batch (499R, with an expiration date of July 31, 2023). Specifically, the reason for this withdrawal was an out-of-specification result in the evaluation, hardness and substance tests. What is enalapril used for? Enalapril, or enalapril, is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor drug commonly used to treat high blood pressure and some forms of chronic heart failure. Therefore, its effect is vasodilator. It is a well-known drug that has been on the market for more than 30 years and is consumed in doses adjusted to the particular characteristics of each patient. Some adverse reactions to the use of this drug (as with any other) have been recorded. Specifically, it is known that in rare cases it can cause dizziness, blurred vision, cough, nausea, fatigue, headaches, chest pain, hypotension, sleep disturbances, confusion, nervousness or drowsiness. Likewise, its use is contraindicated in those patients who have history of angioedema associated with previous treatment with an ACE inhibitor (family to which enalapril itself belongs, let us remember), hereditary or idiopathic angioedema and in pregnant women from the second trimester of pregnancy. In the same way, those who are taking diuretic drugs or who suffer from kidney failure should take special precautions when using Enalapril.
