The Regeni case, the four Egyptian 007s on trial

The four Egyptian 007s accused of the kidnapping and murder of Giulio Regeni, the Friulian researcher kidnapped, tortured and killed five years ago in Egypt, will go to trial. To decide at the end of the preliminary hearing the GUP Pierluigi Balestrieri accepting the request of the Public Prosecutor of Rome. The first hearing is set for October 14th. In the courtroom were present the parents of Giulio Paola Deffendi and Claudio Regeni accompanied by their lawyer Alessandra Ballerini. The four National Security agents who will go to trial are General Sabir Tariq, Colonels Usham Helmi, Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim, and Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif for the crime of multiple kidnapping, and against the latter the prosecutors contest also the complicity in aggravated personal injury and the complicity in aggravated murder. The indictment came after the GUP rejected the objection raised by the defense on the absence of the accused, highlighting how “the widespread and extraordinary media coverage did to raise the news of the pending process to a well-known fact “.
