Mafia, Cassation blocks Graviano letter: “Possible suggestions and directives to family members”

A letter with a “highly cryptic content”, with “apparently confused topics” that could indicate “suggestions” and “directives to family members”. Thus the judges of the Cassation confirm the withholding of a letter written by Giuseppe Graviano, detained at 41bis, and addressed to his wife. The ‘ermellini’ declared the appeal of the defense of Graviano inadmissible against the provision of the surveillance magistrate of Spoleto who had ordered the detention of the letter. For the supreme judges, the decision of the supervisory court of Perugia is correct, “illustrating the features of the highly cryptic content and the ambiguities relating to the particular modalities of the editorial staff itself and the bundling of apparently confused arguments, in order, however, to be able to include an indication of suggestions and directives to family members, with regard to the accusations of collaborators of justice, to which are added references to non-identifiable subjects. From this emerges the adequate illustration of specific elements that lay in the sense of the forwarding of messages comprehensible in their entirety only by subjects able to decode them – conclude the judges of the first criminal section of the Supreme Court – and therefore of the possibility that the communication could harm the purposes of protection and public order of the particular detention regime aimed at severing current criminal ties “.
