Former President of Peru Alberto Fujimori underwent heart surgery

(CNN Spanish) – The former president of Peru Alberto Fujimori underwent heart surgery on Monday to place a stent because the anterior descending coronary artery was 75% obstructed, reported his general practitioner and Popular Force congressman, Alejandro Aguinaga. He added that the former president is in intensive care.

The daughter of the former president and leader of Fuerza Popular, Keiko Fujimori, spoke to the media outside the El Golf clinic, where her father is admitted. He pointed out that he will be evaluated in the next few hours and “as he recovers, the doctors will decide to return to the Centenario clinic later.”

Earlier, the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) had reported that Fujimori was transferred to a local clinic because he required an “invasive cardiac procedure that requires the availability of a bed in the intensive care unit (ICU).”

The 83-year-old former president, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, was hospitalized on Friday for an oxygen saturation problem, according to his lawyer César Nakazaki.

Fujimori is serving a 25-year prison sentence for murder, serious injuries and aggravated kidnapping, crimes committed during his government. According to the state-run Agencia Andina, he was sentenced in April 2009 for the Barrios Altos (1991) and La Cantuta (1992) massacres, as well as the kidnappings of a journalist and a businessman in 1992.

The conviction was unanimously confirmed by the First Transitory Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice in January 2010.

In addition, in 2015 he received another 8 years in prison for the crime of embezzlement.
