Sony launches a new PS5 with a minor, but useful change

A new version of the PS5 has been released by Sony in Australia. Rest assured the first owners, the changes are minor.

The PlayStation 5 will soon celebrate its first year of existence, and the console has already received its first “improvements”, according to information released on August 21 by the site. Press-Start. Sony has released models with a different serial number (CFI-11XX vs. CF1-1XXX, as confirmed by this Japanese user manual). Such a change means that the console has undergone some revisions. But the first owners do not have to worry: they turn out to be minor.

Concretely, this news Playstation 5 now feature a pedestal that can be attached to the console without a screwdriver. On the first versions marketed, the screw used to fix it requires the use of a tool due to a head that is too flat to be able to be turned easily with the fingers.

Already the first changes on the PS5

According to the photo shared by Press-Start to show the differences between the two screws, we can see that the new one also relies on a notched head. This is again a way to improve ergonomics. Remember that the screw is only used when opting for a vertical arrangement. She then comes to fix the base to the console to avoid fears of a fall. If it is not used (PS5 placed horizontally), it is hidden within the base itself.

The new PS5s, with or without a disc drive, would also be a bit lighter. The Japanese user manual announces a weight of 3.6 kilograms for the Digital Edition – against 3.9 kilograms for the first versions. These 300 grams of difference cannot only be linked to the new screw. They must be explained by other modifications among the internal components. These kinds of revisions are commonplace in the video game (or, more generally, tech ‘) market. Life cycles stretch over time and manufacturers therefore have the freedom to positively evolve their products. Sometimes the changes are minor (like here). Sometimes they improve performance. This was notably the case with the Nintendo Switch, of which the first revision made it possible to increase the autonomy.
