A video of the execution, released on Twitter by a friend of Achakzai on Thursday, showed the police president kneeling in the sand with his eyes closed and his hands tied in front of him.

It is surrounded by Taliban soldiers, who then shoot at it several times and leave the body lying in the sand. The video was shared through a network connected to the Taliban and obtained from Afghan security adviser Nasser Waziri.

“He was surrounded by the Taliban and had no choice but to give up last night,” Waziri told Newseek. “The Taliban targeted Achakzai because he was a senior intelligence officer.” Mr Waziri, who also worked for the Afghan government before the Taliban overthrew it on Sunday, said he was also afraid for his life.

The Taliban allegedly gained access to the government’s computer system and began looking for Afghans to help Allied forces or the civilian government. The Taliban’s return to power came almost two decades after they were driven out by a US-led invasion following the 9/11 attacks.

The group has pledged not to seek revenge on its opponents and to respect women’s rights, but there are huge global concerns about their past brutal human rights actions and the fact that tens of thousands of Afghans are still trying to flee.

As the Taliban set out to form a government, leader Haibatullah Akhundzada ordered the release of “political prisoners” and told provincial governors to release them “without any restrictions or conditions,” the group said.

Taliban negotiator Anas Haqqani met with Karzai, the first West-backed Afghan leader since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, and Abdullah, who led the government’s peace council, the SITE monitoring group said.

Taliban leaders “They have stated that they have pardoned all former government officials and that it is therefore not necessary for anyone to leave the country,” said SITE after the Taliban released footage of Haqqani’s meeting with Karzai in Kabul.
