The trail of a cigarette butt thrown by an individual is privileged to explain the origin of the fire in the Massif des Maures, in the Var, Franceinfo learned from a source close to the investigation on Friday August 20, confirming information from the Parisian.

The town of Gonfaron, located on the edge of the A57, is the first to be affected by this fire. For several days, a research cell made up of gendarmes, firefighters and agents of the national forestry office has been investigating to trace the origin of the fire. They worked from an area of ​​600 square meters, until they concentrated their research on an area of ​​20 square meters.

According to information from franceinfo, the public prosecutor of Draguignan, in charge of the investigation, is due to speak on Friday afternoon.

The Var gendarmerie launched on its Twitter account a call for witnesses to determine the circumstances of the start of the fire, which has affected the Massif des Maures since Monday evening. Thursday evening, he had burned 7,100 hectares of vegetation.

“The gendarmerie is looking for the testimony of people with information to communicate on the circumstances of the outbreak of fire”, wrote the gendarmerie. This call for witnesses takes place within the framework of the current judicial investigation, led by the prosecution of the Draguignan judicial court.
