Several studies have stated for several months that invermectin, which is used in veterinary medicine, is also a human drug. It is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic. Its possible use was first described by Australian scientists, who claimed that it had anti-coronavirus effects in the laboratory, but at extremely high doses. Subsequently, the doses described by the researchers were found to go far beyond the limits of drug use, which are safe for humans.

Another study – from Egypt – also pointed to the allegedly indisputable effects of ivermectin in the treatment against coronavirus, but in the end it turned out that it is not as good as it seemed at first glance. Jack Lawrence, a young medical student, found significant flaws in the study and had to withdraw it due to allegations of plagiarism and falsification. At the same time, it was this study that caused the most significant uproar in humans, and they largely sought ivermectin for their own use.

A clear decision of the EMA

Whether or not ivermectin is effective in anti-coronavirus treatment is causing controversy among people and is a relatively controversial topic. At the beginning of March this year, the first larger study was published, which showed different results than the two mentioned above. From the data of 400 respondents, they found that the difference between ivermectin and placebo is almost non-existent. Half of the patients received ivermectin after the onset of symptoms, the other half received placebo, and neither the doctors nor the patients themselves knew who had received the pill.

164 people recovered completely with ivermectin and 156 with placebo, 16 with ivermectin and 13 with placebo had to see a doctor again, and four with ivermectin and five with placebo ended up in hospital. Not a single coronavirus patient died after treatment with ivermectin, and one patient died with placebo. It was this study that subsequently persuaded the European Medicines Agency not to support the use of ivermectin in coronavirus treatment at the end of March – with the exception of well-designed clinical trials.

New study

However, a new study came to light, examining the largest sample to date – up to 1,500 patients. This was at a time when there were almost no anti-pandemic measures in Brazil and there were plenty of sick, unvaccinated patients. This is a study by the Together Trial project, in which researchers found that ivermectin had no effect on the treatment of coronavirus. The research itself was overseen by McMaster University in Canada. One of the representatives of the university, Edward Mills, also presented the results of the study at symposium, held under the auspices of the US National Institutes of Health, took place on August 6.

Mills said at the time that ivermectin had no effect on the outcome of the study in the patients studied. “We do not see in our study that this treatment has the observable benefits that its proponents expect of it.” said Mills. However, the official results have not yet been published, so the authors of the study want to do so in the coming weeks.

Intimidation and words about death

The study initially tested the results of a single dose of ivermectin last year, but subsequently changed the study to give invermectin over three days, with patients receiving doses of 400 micrograms per kilogram of patient weight. In contrast, half of the patients received ineffective placebo and no clinical outcome was obtained with either ivermectin or placebo. Mills himself complained at the symposium that their supporters were intimidating ivermectin, threatening them with the deaths of them and their families.

However, according to him, the pressure from the drug supporters also brought positives for the study. The authors had to adjust it after a group of ivermectin supporters withdrew that it was too small to achieve the expected results.

The Together Trial project itself examines which of the commonly available drugs could be effective in the fight against coronavirus. Most of the drugs for common diseases are cheap, they are well researched and people already know them. However, they have not yet found a suitable drug, but the antidepressant fluvoxamine, which shortens the length of hospital stay by 30 percent in tests, proved to be the best. For this reason, too, the authors of the project decided to continue the study in order to examine the effect of the drug in more detail. Scientists are soon promising more results.
