The chief of inspectors at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant does not have good news: Fear reigns – Novy Čas

The physical integrity of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZAES) in the south of Ukraine was violated several times as a result of frequent shelling. This was announced on Thursday by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, after his team visited the plant for the first time. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report. A team of inspectors from the UN watchdog agency led by Grossi arrived on Thursday to visit the power plant, during which it plans to carry out “security and protection activities”. “It is obvious that the plant and the physical integrity of the plant have been breached several times,” Grossi said after returning from the plant to Ukrainian-controlled territory. The head of the IAEA further stated that part of his organization’s mission will remain at the power plant. “We are not going anywhere. The IAEA is there now, it is in the power plant and it will remain there,” Reuters quoted Grossi as saying. Part of the experts who visited ZAES together with Grossi on Thursday remained at the power plant to later provide an impartial, neutral and technical assessment of the situation. According to Grossi, the inspectors will stay at the power plant “until Sunday or Monday”. “I have concerns about the plant and I will have concerns until there is a more stable situation that is more predictable,” the head of the UN watchdog agency said. International experts from the IAEA arrived in Zaporozhye, which is under the control of Ukrainian forces, on Wednesday. The team of the UN monitoring agency passed through Russian-controlled territory on Thursday and arrived at the power plant around 12:00 local time. The team members were dressed in blue bulletproof vests and had blue helmets on their heads. Part of the inspectors together with Grossi left the power plant after a few hours. Grossi told Russian media that he saw what he needed in ZAES. Russia occupied the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in the first weeks of the invasion. Since then, ZAES has been located near the front line, and in recent weeks its adjacent areas have been repeatedly shelled. Russia and Ukraine blame each other for this shelling.
