Austria, MotoGP (Q2): Martin and Quartararo eclipse the competition – gp-inside.com

Jorge Martin does not stop anymore. Winner of the Styrian Grand Prix last Sunday, he will take the start of the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position, just like a week ago. The Ducati rider set a new lap record this Saturday, helped by the wheel of his teammate Johann Zarco. He beats by 34 thousandths a Fabio Quartararo who was just as exceptional. The other drivers are a few tenths behind.

Fall in the third free practice session, fall in the fourth free practice session, passage through the repechage: Jorge Martin had previously lived a complicated Saturday, he finished it in style. The Spanish rookie landed his third MotoGP pole at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, the second in two weeks.

Fabio Quartararo had nevertheless got the better of his opponents, with a stratospheric 1’22.677 from his first run. The only man under 1’23, the Frenchman had the advantage. But he was hampered in his second run, while Jorge Martin used the wheel of his teammate Johann Zarco to go even faster. Time on the line: 1’22.643.

Both men are a tone above the competition, not to say two or three. You have to go down in 1’23 to find the third, Francesco Bagnaia, 4 tenths from pole. Johann Zarco will open the second row in fourth place, which puts three Ducatis in the top-4. And even four in the top-6 since Jack Miller will close this second row in sixth place, with Marc Marquez to his left. The eight-time world champion is doing better than last weekend and regaining the status of best Honda rider.

In search of his first victory of the year, Joan Mir will have positions to recover since he will be in seventh on the grid. But before going to look for the drivers in front of him, the world champion will have to be wary of Aleix Espargaro, eighth, and Miguel Oliveira, ninth and in search of redemption.
