An artificial intelligence expert contributed to the progress of the autonomous Autopilot function. He believes that further development is in good hands. Tesla’s head of artificial intelligence, Andrej Karpathy, a native of Slovakia, is definitely leaving Elon Musk’s car company – this time permanently. He informed about it on Twitter. “It has been a great pleasure in the past five years to help Tesla achieve its goals,” wrote the native of Bratislava, adding that it was very difficult to leave. “Thank you for everything you have done for Tesla! It was an honor to work with you,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk sent him in response. Vacation is over at the company Andrej Karpathy left Tesla back in March, when he went on a so-called “sabbatical”. “. This is a longer, mostly unpaid leave – a kind of temporary interruption of the career in order to rest. It was originally supposed to last only four months. The AI ​​expert held a key position at Tesla – since the summer of 2017, he led the development of artificial intelligence, which is the basis for the flagship Autopilot function and the long-term vision of bringing a truly fully autonomous electric car to the market. But while this is therefore big news in this respect, Karpathy points out that Tesla’s development team focused on artificial intelligence and specifically the Autopilot feature is “exceptionally strong” and consists of hundreds of engineers “who know what they’re doing.” He sees the difference in the fact that he personally was only more in the public eye, so overall he does not consider this change to be that significant from the car company’s point of view. Currently, Karpathy has no concrete plans for his future. But he plans to delve deeper into his longtime passion in the areas of technical law in AI, open source, and education.
