Richard Pánik celebrates with teammates Source: chicagowolves.com SPRINGFIELD – Slovak hockey player Richard Pánik won the prestigious Calder Cup with his teammates from Chicago Wolves. His team won Sunday night in the fifth match of the AHL Overseas Playoff Final on Icefield Thunderbirds 4-0 and triumphed 4-1 in the entire series. In the final duel, Pánik assisted in the guests’ third goal. The Wolves, who are the NHL Carolina Hurricanes’ farm, dominated the playoffs, losing only four games in four series (14-4). They won the Calder Cup for the third time in history, for the first time since 2008. Pannik scored in all five final duels, scoring the first four each time. The 31-year-old was the mainstay of Chicago on the road to the title, scoring a total of 11 points in six playoff games for six goals and five assists. On Sunday night, in addition to assistance, he also scored two penalty minutes and a plus point. The Jack A. Butterfield Trophy award for the most useful AHL playoff player went to Wolves striker Josh Leivo. The man celebrates his second triumph in the lower AHL overseas competition. In the 2011/2012 season, he won the Calder Cup as a player of Norfolk Admirals, then Tampa Bay Farm. He became the second Slovak to win the Calder Cup twice in his career. Before him, Tomáš Jurč succeeded, who triumphed in the AHL in 2013 in the Grand Rapids Griffins jersey and three years ago celebrated the championship with the Charlotte Checkers.
