Everything in Mariupol is very complicated, chaotic, slow and dishonest on the Russian side, said Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereščuková, apologizing to the city’s residents for their unsuccessful evacuation efforts. Throughout the conflict, Ukrainian authorities have tried to evacuate the people of Mariupol, and humanitarian efforts have often been halted due to a lack of cooperation with Russia. Vereshchuk said that shelling near one of the city’s evacuation collection sites had forced Ukraine to close a humanitarian corridor in Zaporizhia. Ukraine hoped to evacuate 6,000 people on Wednesday, but only 79 eventually reached Zaporizhia. Government officials estimate that more than 100,000 people are currently imprisoned in Mariupol. (bbc)
