Four young Périgourdins killed in Bayonne in a road accident – France Bleu

A fatal road accident claimed four victims on Saturday April 16 in the early morning. The firefighters were alerted at 5 a.m. to an accident car in front of Fnac in Bayonne, avenue du Maréchal Soult, at the level of the ramp with boulevard d’Aritxague. Four young people aged 20 and 21, the occupants of the vehicle, died. “The vehicle registered in Dordogne with its four occupants, was traveling in the direction of Biarritz-Bayonne, when it hit one of the palm trees present on the central reservation, in front of Fnac”, explained to France Bleu Pays Basque the mayor of Bayonne, Jean-René Etchegaray, one of the first people to go to the scene of the tragedy. The city councilor collected from the investigators the same information as the sub-prefect of Bayonne. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed. “The flagrant investigation carried out by the accident office of the Bayonne police station is continuing. This could have cause a loss of control,” explains Bayonne prosecutor Jérôme Bourrier. For now, it is only a hypothesis mentioned by a witness who attended the accident. Shocked, he began to be heard by the police officers. Among the four Périgourdins, two come from the village of Carsac-Aillac in the east of the Dordogne, near Sarlat. They had come to take part in the Bayonne Ham Fair, which started on Thursday and ends at the end of the weekend. An investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident is open.
