PHONE – BlackBerry is leaving. The phones mythical physical keyboard of the 2000s will stop working this Tuesday, January 4, 2022, announced the brand on his site. It will no longer be possible to make calls, send SMS or access Internet.

7.1 OS, BlackBerry 10 Software, or BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and all earlier versions will lose access to many services. In its press release, the brand explains that “services through cellular networks or Wi-Fi connections will no longer work reliably”. Only devices equipped with the Android operating system will remain, in reality, operational to access the cellular network or connect to Wifi.

It’s the end of a long tumble. The BlackBerry Bold and Curve, emblematic models of the brand which popularized instant messaging, BBM, from 2005, have won over millions of users thanks to their integral keyboard.

In 2009, the brand won the day, with 20% of the mobile phone market share. Far ahead of its competitor Apple and its Iphone, still in its infancy. But in 2016, BlackBerry suffered the blow, with 0% market share, overwhelmed by the success of its competitors.

Despite an attempt to relaunch, in particular by installing the Android operating system on its models, this time manufactured by TCL, the BlackBerry does not convince. The brand stops manufacturing them in 2020. However, this latest generation of phone, with other software, will remain operational after this deadline of January 4, 2022.
