England’s victory over Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final, and winning the final against Italy, turns on Twitter and rekindles the spotlight on an outdated issue: * many wonder why Britain plays Europeans after Brexit. “England that wins # EURO2020 when there is none in Europe”, writes one user. “Since the UK has left the EU, #ENG should not be allowed to play the semi-final. #DEN wins by the table,” reads another post. But the answer is simple: the UK’s exit process from the European Union has no impact on football. The European football championships are in fact organized by UEFA which includes all the football federations of Europe plus those of some countries that are not purely European. The British nations – England, Wales and Northern Ireland – are geographically European and can therefore continue to participate in all Uefa competitions that do not require EU membership.
