“Out of standard values”, alert to the island of Vulcano

Yellow alert for the island of Vulcano. This was established by the Civil Protection with the unanimous opinion of the Commission for the prevention of major risks. “In the crater of Vulcano the values ​​are out of the norm only in the top part”, said the mayor of Lipari Marco Giorgianni in a direct on Facebook, having participated in the meeting with the volcanologists of the Ingv and the Civil Protection. The island of Vulcano it already ordinarily presents a widespread risk situation for the population connected above all to fumaroles rich in gas and with high temperatures, but at this stage it must be remembered that they can intensify and extend over larger areas and therefore the danger is greater. “yellow” alert determines, among other things, the enhancement of volcanic monitoring and surveillance activities and greater information to the resident population on the island, as well as to tourists with specific reference to raising the level of risk. “Thanks to the efficient integration of the scientific community into the civil protection system, today we can count on monitoring systems landscape and volcanic surveillance that allow us to follow with great attention the evolution of the activity of our active volcanoes ”, declares Fabrizio Curcio, head of the Civil Protection Department. “And that’s what we’re doing on Vulcan. With the yellow alert level – which can be followed by orange and red or the return to the ordinary green level – it is very important that there is full awareness of the risk, without alarmism, but with great responsibility ”.
