Diabetes in all its forms and the impact it has on other organs such as eyes, heart and liver: this was discussed during the 11th national conference of the Diabetic Doctors Association Foundation. The president of the Amd Graziano Di Cianni focused on diabetic retinopathy: “Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication affecting the eyes that affects the diabetic population, both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. leading causes of blindness in the Western world. The disabling complication is devious because it does not show signs in the first years of development and therefore must be prevented. By controlling blood sugar from the start we prevent diabetic retinopathy. In Italy it is difficult to say precisely how many people are affected by the diabetic network because we do not have population studies. From the studies of the AMD annals we show that about 30-40% of the diabetic population has signs of retinal impairment and therefore of diabetic retinopathy ”. In addition to the heart, diabetes also has a significant impact on the liver, as explained by Paolo Di Bartolo, president of the Diabetes Medical Association Foundation: “Diabetes-liver is a link, a very dangerous link: think that fatty liver disease affects more or less one in three people walking down the street but when we go into the world type 2 diabetes 70% of people who have type 2 diabetes have steatotic liver disease, a disease that if it is not researched and does not come into somehow controlled risks, especially in people with type 2 diabetes, to slip into the more severe forms of liver disease which are fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The importance of screening for hepatitis C was underlined by Massimo Andreoni, head of infectious disease at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic in Rome: “Screening for hepatitis C is essential in the patient who has diabetes, because chronic liver disease is often , therefore chronic C virus hepatitis becomes complicated with diabetes. So we find diabetes in people we have been following for chronic hepatitis for years. So this obviously explains the fact that all people who have chronic hepatitis must be screened for diabetes ”.
