Consumption, Assobibe: in 2020 soft drinks down – 8.4%, weighing away from home -35%

The consumption of beverages in Italy in 2020 fell overall by 8.4% (non-alcoholic beverages -8.4% and alcoholic beverages -8.3%), with important repercussions on a sector that has 3,300 companies. To detect it is a research commissioned by Assobibe to Nomisma. Numbers that are partly explained by the contraction in consumption “away from home” which in 2020 recorded a -35% compared to the previous year: the Ho.Re.Ca sector lost 34.4 billion euros, and the balance between established and discontinued businesses it was -13,060. This was reported by a research commissioned by Assobibe to Nomisma published on the occasion of the assembly of Assobibe, the Confindustria Association that represents producers of soft drinks. The contraction of tourist flows in Italy contributed to making the picture even more complex, which last year recorded a -52%, especially in the foreign tourism item (-70%) and the spread of study and work methods from remote: in 2020 the potential growth of Italians involved in distance learning and training courses is over +11 million, while there are 7 million workers in smart working during the lockdown, with evident repercussions on consumption in public establishments and restaurants, which they lost an average of -250 million euros per month.
