Russia is the European country most bereaved by the pandemic, with a death toll ranging between 200,000 and 400,000, according to sources. Every day, the epidemic is breaking new records. Moscow remains the main epidemic center and has therefore decided to confine its residents over the age of 60. The measure comes into force on Monday, October 25, until at least February 25.

Tatiana is 69 years old. Like many Russian retirees, she is still working, distributing newspapers to improve the regularity of her retirement pension. She still has a few words of French that she learned at university to express her anger at this confinement that is happening: “We can’t work. We want to live freely!”

Others, on the contrary, are resigned, like Galina, 80, who returns home with a bag full of books: “We have to stay at home, so I went to the library. And then I’ll go see some relatives. I’ll take walks, read and go on the Internet.”

Galina has already had the Covid, but she is not vaccinated, like more than two-thirds of the over 60s here. Although they represent the vast majority of hospital patients, they refuse the Sputnik vaccine, like Anastasia, 64: “Most people don’t trust it.”

“They’re scared. They’re too used to lies. They don’t believe in power.”

Moscow City Hall is preparing for an eleven-day shutdown of all its non-essential services from October 28, and companies are called upon to put a third of their workforce into telecommuting. These eleven days of restrictions, until November 7, will be introduced alongside a week off at the national level from October 30, announced by Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.
