James Michael Tyler, best known for his role as Gunther in Friends, died on Sunday, October 24 at the age of 59.

Actor James Michael Tyler died peaceful on sunday at his home in los angeles. The news of his death was published by his manager. The actors were diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2018, Sky News reported. Tyler became famous mainly as Gunther from Friends, but he was a man of many talents.

“The world knew him as Gunther from the successful series Friends, but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, a musician, a cancer awareness activist and a loving husband,” the actors’ manager wrote. “Once you’ve met him, you’ve befriended him for life.”

Tyler’s character Gunther, sometimes nicknamed “the seventh friend”, has become one of the most popular supporting characters in the series Friends. Gunther was a bartender and later the manager of Central Perk, where the six main protagonists spent time, and during ten series the sitcom was hopelessly in love with Rachel, played by Jennifer Aniston.

After filming Friends in 2004, Tyler appeared in the series Scrubs and Modern Music, while also playing himself in Matt LeBlanc’s sitcom (Joey from Friends) Episodes.

After the Tylers found out about cancer, he also acted in two short films during treatment and participated in the information campaign of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

In an interview in June this year, Tyler revealed that due to his health condition he could not personally participate in the filming of the memorial special Friends: The Reunion. He battled cancer for three years, but it spread to his bones, causing him to paralyze his lower body. Tyler left behind his wife Jennifer Carn.
