THE ANGELES. More than 18,000 people signed the petition for a ban on small arms when filming film scenes and for better working conditions for staffs by Sunday afternoon.

It is a reaction to an incident in which the American actor Alec Baldwin fatally injured the cameraman and injured the director while filming the scene in the western Rust.

Prohibition of sharp weapons

“There is no excuse for something like this to happen in the 21st century,” the petition said, initiated by screenwriter and director Bandar Albuliwi.

Dave Cortese, a Democrat elected to the California Senate, issued a statement on Saturday, pointing to “alarming” working conditions and breaches of safety at work during film and theater productions, including “unnecessarily risky use of small arms”.

He added that he intends to enforce a bill banning live ammunition in the California movie scenes. In response to the tragedy that Baldwin inadvertently caused, the production of the successful police series The Rookie decided to immediately ban the use of sharp ammunition for filming.

However, some people in the film industry have said that using weapons for filming is not a problem. For example, Shi Lian Huang, the first professional gunsmith in Hollywood, wrote on her Twitter account that she had worked on hundreds of movie scenes using weapons that went around without incident because strict safety protocols and protective covers were followed.

“The tragedy that happens in this way denies everything I know about the handling of weapons in movie scenes,” she wrote. She admitted that “the most basic, standard safety procedures may not have been followed when filming the film Rust. And that no one stopped production (of the film) anyway.”

Memorial ceremony

Baldwin is cooperating with a police investigation, which focused on the specialist in charge of the weapon and the assistant director, who handed it over to the actor before filming the fateful scene.

On Sunday, Baldwin attended a private memorial service for 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins in Santa Fe, who was fatally shot in the chest on Thursday while filming one of the scenes. Director Joel Souza (48), who was released from hospital after a short hospitalization, was also injured.

Meanwhile, the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600 organized an online fundraiser to raise funds to support the Hutchins family, who had raised a nine-year-old son with her husband, Matthew.

The American Film Institute (AFI) has set up a scholarship in honor of Hutchins to support budding cameramen.
