Death of James Michael Tyler, alias Gunther in the series “Friends” – archyde

He played for ten years the iconic Central Perk server – and Rachel’s frozen lover. Actor James Michael Tyler, best known for his role as Gunther in the series Friends, died Sunday, October 24 at the age of 59, reported the American press.

The comedian died at his home in Los Angeles from prostate cancer he had suffered from since 2018, said a relative, Toni Benson. “The world knew him as Gunther from the series [“Friends”], but his family knew him as an actor, musician, cancer activist and loving husband ”, he said in a press statement.

“Scrubs” and “Modern Music”

His character in Friends appeared in 150 episodes across ten seasons of the popular 1990s sitcom. He was the sarcastic manager of Central Perk, the cafe where the six friends spent, it seemed, half of their lives.

James Michael Tyler also appeared in the series Scrubs (by Bill Lawrence) as a psychologist. He also played in the series Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Modern Music.

In a tweet, Warner Bros said mourning the loss of a “Beloved actor, integral part of our family Friends. Our thoughts are with his family, colleagues, friends and fans ”.

Tyler had announced in June, during a show on NBC, that he had suffered from an advanced form of prostate cancer since September 2018, which had spread to his bone system.
