Her ties also connected her with Slovakia. She visited Bratislava, Trenčianske Teplice, and became friends with the Slovak actor Ivan Paluch, whom she met during the filming in 1969. On Monday, October 25, 90 years will have passed since her birth.
Annie Girardot was born on October 25, 1931 in Paris. She survived World War II with her mother and brother in Normandy. As a child, she wanted to play, but like her mother, she first became a nurse. In addition to her work, she attended drama courses and later began studying acting at the Conservatory in Paris. When she shone on the records of the Comédie Francaise in Paris in 1956, the poet Jean Cocteau described the actress as the greatest talent of the post-war era.
In the same year, she won the Suzanne Bianchetti Prize for her acting discovery for the role of Gisela, who helps three students blackmail a professor in the drama The Man with the Golden Keys (1956). Two years later, she starred in the classic crime scene of Maigret.
She also played the role of a prostitute
Italian director Luchino Visconti cast the actress in the lead role – along with Alain Delon – in the social drama Rocco and His Brothers (1960), in which she played the unhappy Milanese prostitute Nadia. The film was a turning point not only in her professional but also in her private life – one of Renato Salvatori’s acting partners became her fateful husband.

The successful film It Happened in Turin was directed by Mario Monicelli in 1963. The international award in the form of the Volpi Cup at the Venice International Film Festival (IFF) brought her the role of a lone Kay, experiencing a brief emotional outburst to a French actor in the chamber melodrama based on the novel Simenon’s Three Rooms in Manhattan (1965).
She appeared in the film Dillinger’s Dead, which was shot in 1969 by Marco Ferreri. In the same year, director Aleksandar Petrović completed his film The World’s Ending Soon – and it was while filming this film from the Serbian countryside that Girardot met Ivan Paluch. From the beginning, they understood each other and, as Ivan Palúch mentioned, they walked together on the carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. They met again after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989.
Impressive performance awarded by César
In another artistically tuned film, The Old Virgin from 1970, Girardot’s acting partner was Philippe Noiret, with whom she met several times on screen. The impressive performance awarded by César was also confirmed by the actress in the role of a renowned doctor in the psychological drama The Most Valuable What I Have (1976), directed by Luc Bertucelli. The following year, she portrayed the protagonist of the tragic story Survive Your Hell.
Girardot’s connection with the comedian Louis de Funés seems unconventional. The comedy Neither from the car nor to the car, which was shot in 1978 by Claude Zidi, was one of the audience’s favorites. Girardot also won the hearts of the audience as an energetic emancipated police investigator in the drama Gentle Chicken (1978), where she was again seconded by Philippe Noiret.
Director Philippe de Broca decided to build on this acting duo as a continuation of the story, but this time already in a significantly comedic tuning and entitled They Stole the Torso of Jupiter (1980). In the meantime, however, he cast Girardot in the comedy Sukničkár (1979) as one of the wives of a piano virtuoso (Jean Rochefort). Another successful film dates from 1979 and, with the star cast, The Road Rome – Naples is impassable.
In the 80’s, the actress slowed down her work pace
In the 80’s, the actress slowed down her work pace. Later, however, it achieved further success. The film prize in the form of Caesar for the actress in the supporting role was won by the film Bedar of the 20th Century (1995) – a film that carried the motifs of the famous novel by Victor Hugo to the 20th century. Girardot received the same award for the film The Pianist (2001) – his literary masterpiece was a book by the Austrian Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek.
In old age, Annie Girardot suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. She died on February 28, 2011 in her native Paris, where she is also buried. Annie Girardot also wrote memoir Hot Blood and Departures and Returns. Slovak viewers associate her with the voice of the Czech actress Věra Galatíková, who dubbed her in most of the films shown in Czechoslovakia.
