Four Slovaks killed in accident in Belgium, flew by car into a canal in the center of Ghent – TVNOVINY.sk

The four people who died on Saturday morning after their car ended up in the water in the Leie canal in the center of Ghent are more than likely Slovak nationals. With a link to a police statement in Ghent, the newspaper said this on its website Gazette of Antwerp.

In the evening, the newspaper reported that the Peugeot car ended the night from Friday to Saturday in the Leie canal on Huidevetterskaai. The car with the French license plate passed through the barriers and ended up in the water.

“We have an idea of ​​who the four passengers are probably,” a spokesman for the Ghent police said in a statement to the media. However, at the time of this declaration (at 7 pm), the four had not yet been officially identified.

Police admitted that the license plate did not reveal the identity of the four-member crew, but a more detailed investigation led them to a 33-year-old Slovak who has a registered residence in Ghent.

The woman they found in the car is probably his 35-year-old girlfriend. He is also of Slovak origin, but does not have a registered stay in Belgium.

An inspection of the bodies before the autopsy showed that two other men in the car – aged 23 and 26 – had identity documents in their pockets and were also of Slovak origin.

The Ghent police have confirmed that they have contacted the Slovak authorities and are still investigating why the crew of the crashed car was driving around Ghent with a car with a French license plate.
