Anne Hidalgo wants to take her place, and it shows. For her first major campaign meeting, held this Saturday in Lille, the socialist candidate and mayor of Paris did not mince words to mention the head of state Emmanuel Macron and his government. According to her, the current five-year term has not made it possible to respond to the country’s problems.

“The facts are there: 12 million poor, when we were assured that purchasing power would increase. 300,000 homeless when we were promised stable accommodation. Six million unemployed when we were guaranteed that opportunities would flow. 67 millions of French people more divided than ever and who wonder if they still have a shared destiny “, denounced Anne Hidalgo in front of a thousand supporters. Among them, the former Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure or the mayor of Lille Martine Aubry.

“The current five-year term has added to the incompetence the arrogance of a technocracy which thinks it knows better than everyone else”, again tackled the mayor of Paris, arriving on stage with a rose in hand, a tradition of the Socialist Party. “This government takes itself seriously, but it is not serious.”

She then attacked Emmanuel Macron directly, without ever naming him. “No one deserves to be looked down upon”, she argued. “You have all heard: ‘this one is a leader, that one is nothing’. The left knows that each one is unique in his dignity and in his rights. All, without exception, are essential to our Republic . The left has never dismissed anyone. “

According to the socialist candidate, “the French no longer support social breakdown, the verticality of a power which refuses any contradiction, which seeks to muzzle the counter-powers, a head of state who, by dint of being alone, is accustomed to not think like him “. “In France, there is no Jupiter, no supreme savior, no providential man”, she continued, in a thinly veiled allusion to Emmanuel Macron. “I will put an end to the contempt, to the arrogance, to this condescension of those who know so little about our lives. France, we govern it by respecting it.”

She also targeted the Keeper of the Seals Éric Dupond-Moretti, indicted for possible conflicts of interest with his former activities as a lawyer. The socialist candidate took the opportunity to promise that with her, “an indicted minister will have to resign” of a government that she wants “resembling the Frenchwomen and the French”.

Barely in the polls (between 4 and 7%, behind Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Yannick Jadot), Anne Hidalgo ensures that she will go “until the end”. To convince, the one who describes herself as “the embodiment of the republican promise” proposes in particular to lower the right to vote to 16 years, to repeal Parcoursup, to increase the wages of people in contact with students, to set up universal unemployment insurance, to make mental health a major cause of five-year term, to create a law for “the right to die with dignity” or even “guarantee that no household is forced to devote more than a third of its income to housing”.
