Orbital Starship has finally started, but it has a big problem. Activists demand an immediate end – FonTech

SpaceX continues to try to test its revolutionary Starship rocket as soon as possible and finally get it into orbit, or at least try.

Authorities and activists, meanwhile, are throwing logs at their feet, informs Ars Technica.

Update October 22, 2021:

Elon Musk has just announced via Twitter that Starship will be ready for its debut orbital flight next month and that the company will only be waiting for permission from the Federal Aviation Administration.

At the same time, some speculated that the start would not take place until March next year. While this is possible as the FAA likes to linger, it is also more than certain that Musk has better and more up-to-date information, and therefore permission is likely to be granted much sooner.

SpaceX performed the very first test of R-Vac (Raptor Vacuum) engines mounted directly on the rocket last night in Starbas, writes Ars Technica. It seems to have been successful and the company itself boasted about it via Twitter.

The Starship S20 and its first stage of the Super Heavy B4 will face a few more tests, after which it can wait eagerly in Texas, while it will lack only one thing – permission to start.

If the flight actually comes and ends successfully reaching orbit, the Starship will overcome the SLS, which is much longer in development and many of its components still exist from the time of the Space Shuttle.

When will he receive the license?

Musk’s space company continues to face a problem with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), from which it needs to obtain a license. According to the original, they were to test Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy missiles in the area, but not the huge Starship.

This has raised environmental concerns while attracting opportunists who use the situation to denigrate society. One of them is the person who stated during the hearing of public opinions on the environmental assessment that SpaceX is an oil company and that the authorities should treat it in this way.

It was also said that Starbase is a “nonsense factory”, which amused many fans. The factory has already received a funny nickname in the past, which the competing Blue Origin is responsible for. In his infographics, he described Starbase as “a spaceport that does not exist.”

Starship S20 started – a bit

Of course, there was also constructive criticism from the public, and environmentalists mentioned in particular the power plant and fuel factories, which were not taken into account by the FAA’s environmental assessment. At the same time, local residents complained about noise and constantly closed roads.

However, the cancellation of a project in this locality is practically impossible, and given the shift that all humanity can potentially cause, its slowing down is disadvantageous for all. SpaceX knows this very well and, while waiting for permission to fly, is actively testing its prototypes and building a launch pad.

The Starship S20, which is the first to fly into orbit along with the first stage of the Super Heavy B4, has finally started its engines. That is, at least in part, because instead of a complete start, only a pre-combustion test has taken place so far (fuel combustion before the main chamber, the power of which spins the turbines for pumping further fuel). How writes NASASpaceflight, in Texas, meanwhile, a new Raptor rocket engine factory is growing, which the company will soon need hundreds of.

Will they capture the first orbital rocket yet?

The tall launch tower, which is used to support the rocket before launch and refueling, already receives “chopsticks” to capture the landing first and second stages instead of being forced to land on their own feet. Because tourists will also fly to Starship in the future, it is advisable to move some functions to ground equipment that is more reliable.

Musk has said in the past that the first orbital Starship and Super Heavy will not be intercepted and, for safety reasons, will attempt a soft landing at sea. Due to the fact that the first orbital flight is constantly delayed, it is possible that by the time of its launch, the capture system will be ready.

The first stages of the Falcon 9 rocket land on their own landing gear, but according to Musek, the capture has a great advantage. The rocket is lighter, so it can carry a larger load and at the same time it can be reused much faster. The Starship should be able to start again an hour after landing, ie almost immediately after the connection with the first stage, loading of cargo and refueling.
