(CNN) – Two foreigners were killed and three other tourists were injured when they were caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting in the popular resort town of Tulum, Mexico, state authorities said Thursday. Their nationalities were not provided.
The shooting began Wednesday night at a restaurant while customers were eating. The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement that “the initial investigation established that the incident was the result of a confrontation between members of criminal cells dedicated to drug trafficking.”
“The five people inside the restaurant were injured at the time of the confrontation between the two criminal groups.”
One woman died at the scene and the other at a local hospital. “Paramedics immediately arrived at the scene in downtown Tulum to provide first aid to the injured and transfer people to hospital for medical attention,” the statement said.
Security protocols were activated immediately and “with C5 technology it was possible to locate one of the assailants, who was also injured and hospitalized.”
The mayor of Tulum, Marciano Dzul Caamal, wrote on Twitter: “I reiterate to the people of Tulum and visitors: security is my priority and with the coordination of the three levels of government, we will recover the peace we deserve.”
