Since the start of 2021, illegal arrivals in the United States have multiplied to now reach the highest levels in 20 years. Between October 2020 and August 2021, the authorities arrested 1.5 million people at the border with Mexico, a record.

Immigrants can apply for asylum if they have been subjected to persecution in their country on the basis of their race, religion, nationality or political opinion. Most of the time, they are single men with links to smugglers, but also families or minors.

A humanitarian crisis and a political crisis

Earlier this year, the governor of Texas declared a state of emergency for 28 of the counties on the border with Mexico and still hopes to build a wall with state funds, in line with Donald Trump’s plan. .

Immigration is one of the major challenges of President Joe Biden’s tenure. In Washington, the Republican opposition accuses the government of downplaying the situation and of not naming what it calls a migration crisis.
