This Thursday, October 21, 2021 is a “historic day” for the animal cause. The French senators and deputies have just agreed on a major text which marks the end of the breeding of mink, wild animals in circuses, or the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores. Explanations.

The fight was long and arduous but this first victory is even more beautiful for animal protection associations. This morning, seven senators and seven deputies met during a mixed joint committee (CMP). Goal ? Find common ground on the animal issue.

It must be said that for several months, the points of view diverged between the lower house (the deputies) and the upper house (the senators). But that’s it, the two institutions ended up reaching an agreement. And the least we can say is that this text brings great advances for the animal cause. Here are the main points to remember:

End of sale of dogs and cats in pet stores

Yes, it will soon no longer be possible to go to a pet store to buy your future four-legged companion. This important step forward will take effect from 2024, while the ban on displaying animals in the window will be immediate. The aim is to curb compulsive shopping in these shops and to fight against the early weaning of puppies and kittens.

End of mink farming

It is also over for the farms of mink and other non-domestic species raised mainly for their fur. And the good news is that this ban is immediate.

End of wild animals in circuses

Bears, tigers, elephants and other wild animals will soon no longer have their place in circuses. However, it will take two years for the end of their reproduction and seven years for their exploitation. And if the deadline is so long, it is to organize the reception of these animals in the best conditions.

End of dolphin shows

What about dolphinariums? Same punishment for shows with dolphins which will be banned in five years. But the research programs, if they were to exist one day, could take place under validation and approval from the Ministry of Ecology.

Reinforcement of penalties

Currently, acts of cruelty to animals are punishable by two years’ imprisonment and a fine of 30,000 euros. With this text, the authors of these atrocities will incur an additional year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros. And if the act was fatal for the animal, the penalty could be increased to 5 years and a fine of 75,000 euros.

Pets welcome

Shelters and sanctuaries that welcome wild animals (from circuses and dolphinariums, for example) are prohibited from showing them to the public or having recourse to reproduction.

These major advances should lead to others, such as the end of pony rides at fairs and events, the ban on the online sale of animals by individuals (as on Leboncoin), or the condemnation of the zoopornography, etc.

The text must be voted on November 15, 2021 by the National Assembly and the Senate and no changes will be made.
