Minister of Education Branislav Gröhling believes that in the coming weeks he will achieve a positive result in connection with the increase in teachers’ salaries. At the same time, he announced the approval of three important laws for regional education and talks about a big leap of reform.

There is a reform school leap

Three important laws for regional education, which are the basis for education reform, will enable the ministry to introduce important changes that have long been demanded by teachers, parents or the professional public. “Today, the reform school leap and the biggest reforms that we will bring during this government officially begin, and their goal is to move Slovak education into the 21st century,” said the head of education.

The three amendments adopted in parliament yesterday form the backbone of the individual reforms, but a number of other reforms will be adopted outside the paragraphs or outside the individual decrees directly in the schools. “Thanks to these amendments, we will be able to prioritize changing the content of education, digitizing education, improving teacher education and promoting inclusive education.” stated.

Four key areas

There are a hundred changes in the three laws, whether systemic or minor, that will only be felt by school principals or parents. Key changes include streamlining the admissions process, adjusting the school-leaving examination, starting optimization (schools will be able to group together in clusters), reducing administrative burdens, introducing school support teams, new options for leaving primary schools, introducing digital coordinators, defining inclusive education after for the first time in law, the introduction of the concept of national school and many others.

Four areas are particularly important for Gröhling and the education sector – reform of the content of education, better teacher education, support for modern approaches and strong support for pupils with special needs, which is being addressed by State Secretary Svetlana Síthová. EUR 50 million should be set aside for initial changes.

Gröhling also commented on teachers’ salaries and believes that a positive result will be achieved, although they have not yet agreed on anything. In this context, it is negotiating not only with the Minister of Finance Igor Matovič, but also with the Prime Minister Eduard Heger. “I believe we will reach a positive result next week,” stated.

The head of the department wants an increase in teachers’ salaries. “It’s hard for me to tell if it will be or not,” said the head of the education department. As he added, it does not depend only on him. The current proposal does not set aside any funding not only for teachers’ salaries, but also for the salaries of all civil servants and civil servants. Dissatisfaction with the fact that the draft budget for 2022 did not provide for an increase in teachers’ salaries, expressed, for example, the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers in Slovakia, but also the Slovak Chamber of Teachers.

The graduation exam will be this year, we will not cancel it

The school-leaving examination will take place this school year and will not be canceled. “We will look at the content of individual exams, we will look at how the commissions will be set up,” said the head of the education department. In the current situation, when a certain percentage of pupils and teachers have already been vaccinated, the school-leaving examination will be, according to the Minister of Education.

In connection with the abolition of the graduation exam 2022, a petition has already been filed, under which more than 16,200 people are currently signed. The signatories of the petition claim that the possibility of graduation in the form of an average of marks for the past four years of study is possible. They also point out that they lack a lot of knowledge. According to the signatories of the petition, it is already too late for any reduction of the curriculum or its catching-up.
