The agency explained that vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are approved in the USA. One dose from any of them can now be given after completion of the primary vaccination with another covid vaccine.

People who initially received two doses from Moderna and are 65 years of age or older or older than 18, but at high risk of covid infection, can now receive a booster dose. All adults who received a single-dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson more than two months ago are also entitled to revaccination.

Previously, only immunocompromised people or people who belonged to elderly or high-risk groups and originally received the vaccine from Pfizer were eligible for the booster dose. “The FDA has found that the known and potential benefits of using a single heterologous booster dose outweigh the known and potential risks of using them in eligible populations.” the FDA said in a statement.

The FDA warns of side effects

The FDA also warned of very rare vaccine-related side effects. The so-called Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines are associated with an increased risk of myocarditis and pericarditis – especially in younger men. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is associated with a severe and rare type of blood clot in combination with a low platelet count, one or two weeks after administration. The risk is highest in women aged 18 to 49 years.
