The poem was written at the end of February 2018. The poet and director Nikita Slovák wrote it in ten minutes as a direct reaction to the murder of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová. It was then read by their parents, now it has become a song, which is the first activity of the Let’s Finish It initiative.
“When the police investigators were closed and Fico threatened the president to go to the streets, bile rose in me. This is no longer a war in the police, but a war for the country. Not them, but decent people have to take to the streets. They are still our streets, we can’t leave them. I called Nikita for coffee to say what we would do with it, “says Dorota Nvotová.
When he showed her his lyrics, she set it to music almost immediately and was created A ballad about John and Martin. The selection of other musicians as guests was just as quick. The authors addressed Juraj Benetin in a second voice, who took care of the accompanying music of the assembly For Decent Slovakia with the singing of the national anthem. Jozef Celupták, the performer of the composition, came to the studio to record the cello Black Swan Martin Burlas, which was also dedicated to Ján and Martin.
I wanted to express what is happening in Slovakia, says Martin Burlas about the new song
A ballad about John and Martin it begins in a reverent atmosphere. After the words “As if they cut down two trees in bloom / what they could have fruit in the autumn after the summer”, which is kept written on paper by Zlatica Kušnírová, the song jumps to a dramatic waltz rhythm. Footage of the parents of a young murdered couple and musicians in the studio will be replaced by paintings from the square in the spring of 2018. It is a symbol of what the authors are all about.
Festival Pohoda organized Concerts for Ján and Martin in Gregorovce, symbolically for the anniversary of their planned wedding, which was no longer held. However, the new song is not just another honor and memory of the murdered journalist and his fiancée archaeologist.
“Today, we are forgetting the victims of two young people who have done more for this country than anyone else. However, we also forget about the Congregations for Decent Slovakia, their rare atmosphere of human understanding and courtesy. And when the squares began to be occupied by fools, madmen and conspirators, we agreed that this song could be a good introduction to our civic initiative. Let’s finish it. Something that will unify the atmosphere and set the tone for our meeting on the eve of Dušičky, “explains Nikita Slovák.
They want to present the song live for the first time on Wednesday, October 27, on Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava. They are preparing a meeting there, to which they have also been invited
