The volcano La Cumbre Vieja, which erupted on September 19, is constantly burning tons of magma and poisonous gases. While magma is a problem mainly for the island itself and its inhabitants, gases are a significant problem for the rest of the old continent. As the portal pointed out imeteo.sk, a cloud of sulfur dioxide will move across Europe in the coming hours. Thanks to the flow of air, it will progress all the way to Asia.

Hazardous sulfur dioxide

Sulfur dioxide is one of the most dangerous volcanic gases. In a month of operation, the volcano was estimated to throw about 300,000 tons into the atmosphere. Together with nitrogen dioxide, it is one of the most common causes of so-called acid rain.

Such precipitation with a very low Ph in the range of 4 to 4.5 affects the quality of the soil, but also the water in lakes or streams, which can lead to the death of fish. They also affect living organisms found in the soil. There is also damage to plants and trees. Buildings are also exposed to them.

Sulfur dioxide from the wider area of ​​the Eastern Atlantic, where its concentrations are extreme, already reaches France and the southern part of England. The evening should move over Germany as well, and our territory should be hit on Wednesday.

However, it should not get to the ground until the rain, which should fall from Thursday to Friday. However, it is expected that in our country these precipitation will have only a very slightly reduced pH and should not cause significant damage to the environment.
