From Monday, October 18, civil protests begin against a bill that would restrict access to safe and legal abortion. The law from the OĽANO workshop will be discussed in the second reading by the deputies at the parliamentary session, which will begin on Tuesday, October 19. The proposal is presented as helping women, but in practice it would endanger their health, life and dignity. People on the initiative We will not be silent think so.

That is why the initiative We will not be silent and citizens from various parts of Slovakia are calling for protests against this law, against the arrogance of power and for a solidarity and just society. They will take place in Bratislava, Trnava, Banská Bystrica, Brno, Prague (October 18) and Košice (October 20) At the same time, they are sending a letter to parliament, supported by 60 organizations and initiatives, urging Members not to support the proposal and express solidarity with all women in the country. According to them, the proposal seeks to introduce major barriers to access to safe abortion. It would pointlessly extend the already problematic mandatory waiting time for abortion to 96 hours, even in the case of abortions for medical reasons.

They would receive health care later

In practice, this would mean that women would receive healthcare later, which could lead to a threat to their health. Many women simply do not have an abortion and will have to look for illegal and potentially unsafe abortions. “The law would further restrict access to information about which abortion facilities perform and under what conditions. On the other hand, the law would strengthen the scope for providing religiously discolored, biased, unprofessional and scientifically unsubstantiated information about abortion.” thinks the initiative.

They refuse to perform abortions

According to research by the organization Choice of Choice, a third of the 70 mapped facilities refuse to provide legal abortion, 43% provide legal abortion at the request of a woman, and 23% cannot determine availability due to lack or inconsistency of information about the facility. The geographical distribution of services is unbalanced. Research on options has confirmed that in some regions, most of the mapped facilities refuse to provide legal abortion and women have to travel more than 100 km repeatedly to the nearest classification that provides abortion.

“It is therefore clear that women living in poor economic and social situations, single mothers, multiple mothers or women living in remote regions would pay more for further restrictions on sexual and reproductive rights. Protests will not be silently organized against further restrictions on abortion. , as well as for the overall improvement of the situation of sexual and reproductive rights: for access to free contraception, for quality sex education, for free safe abortion, including medication, for quality maternity care and for decent and high-quality healthcare available to all in general, ” the initiative explained.
