Canada, Trudeau on indigenous children’s mass graves: “It is not an isolated incident”

“Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident or an exception. We must not hide, we must recognize the truth.” So Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned to talk about the mass grave scandal with the bodies of 215 indigenous children found near a Catholic residential school. Trudeau promised “concrete action” in support of Canadian survivors, families and indigenous people. The premier admitted that residential schools, where indigenous children separated from their families were transferred to be ‘re-educated’ and assimilated into Canadian culture, “were a reality, a tragedy that existed here, in our country, and we must admit it.” The remains of the 215 children, some of them as young as three, were found near the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia, which operated from 1890 to 1978.
