United States: Former US President Bill Clinton discharged from hospital

“President Clinton was released from UC Irvine Medical Center today,” Dr Alpesh N. Amin said in a statement released by the former head of state’s spokesperson on Twitter on Sunday (October 17th). Live footage from CNN showed Bill Clinton, masked on face and accompanied by his wife Hillary, leaving the Orange facility and giving a thumbs up in front of the cameras.

“His fever and white blood cell count have returned to normal and he will be returning home to New York to finish his treatment with antibiotics,” added Dr Amin. The ex-president, who celebrated his 75th birthday in August, will have spent five nights at Irvine Medical Center.

According to US media, he was first affected by a urinary tract infection that spread to the bloodstream, causing sepsis. He was in California for an event related to his foundation when he felt tired. Bill Clinton then went to the hospital, where the risk of Covid-19 or heart problems was ruled out.

President of the United States from 1993 to 2001, the Democrat has had many health problems in the past. In particular, he had to be hospitalized in 2004, when he underwent a quadruple coronary bypass surgery to free four blocked arteries, and in 2010, when he underwent angioplasty. This prompted him to adopt a vegetarian diet and to discuss in public the change in diet he undertook to have better health.

“Things might have been different if I hadn’t eaten so many burgers and steaks, and had less stress in my life,” he told ABC channel.

When he left the White House after two terms, this bon vivant threw himself into many humanitarian and diplomatic causes. Bill Clinton has traveled the world, as much to participate in generously paid conferences as to travel to disaster areas or raise funds for the fight against AIDS.

Little by little, his pace slowed down. He remains involved in its foundation, supported the – unsuccessful – campaign of his wife Hillary against Donald Trump in 2016, but travels less. He lives with Hillary Clinton in Chappaqua, New York.
