British police have described the murder of MP Amessa as a terrorist act – SME.sk

LONDON. In the early hours of Saturday, British police called the murder of British Conservative party member David Amess a terrorist act, AFP and AP reported.

“The initial investigation revealed a potential motive associated with Islamist extremism,” the metropolitan police said in a statement.

The investigation is being led by members of a special anti-terrorist police unit. “The police believe that the attacker acted alone,” the AP added.

Amess died Friday after being stabbed several times by an attacker. The attack took place at the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, about 62 kilometers east of the capital London, shortly after 12.05 local time (13.05 CET) during a meeting with voters in its constituency.

Police detained a 25-year-old man on suspicion of murder immediately after the attack. A knife was found on the spot. Police arrived at the scene within minutes and found Amessa with several injuries, which he eventually succumbed to despite the efforts of rescuers.

Amess, 69, has been a member of the British Parliament for Southend West since 1997. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1983. According to AFP, Amess has been a longtime supporter of Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit).

Violence against British politicians is rare. In June 2016, during the campaign before the Brexit referendum, the attacker shot and subsequently stabbed Labor MP Jo Cox, the AP said.
