No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bloodshed in the Fatimiya Mosque in Kandahar Province. The assassination took place a week after a suicide bomb attack on a Shiite mosque in Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, which claimed 46 lives. The Afghan branch of the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS), known as the Islamic State – Khorasan (IS-K), joined the attack.

Calls for donating blood to the wounded appeared on the mosque’s Facebook account. Photographs of dead people lying on the ground, whose authenticity could not be immediately verified, were published on social networks.

Eyewitnesses of Friday’s attack in Kandahar said there were four explosions, two inside the mosque and two outside. Hundreds of people usually attend Friday prayers, AFP recalls. Fatimiya Mosque is the largest mosque of minority Shiites in Kandahar.

“We are saddened to learn that a Shiite mosque in Kandahar has exploded, killing and injuring many of our compatriots.” a spokesman for the local Ministry of the Interior wrote on Twitter. “Special forces in the Islamic Emirate (Afghanistan) have come to the fore to determine the nature of the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he added.

There was a bloody incident in Kunduz last week

The cause of the attack was not immediately known. The bloody incident took place a week after a suicide attack in the city of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan, to which the Islamic State-Khorasan jihadist organization (IS-K) joined, and dozens of people died during it. At least 140 other people were injured at the time.
