The attack took place at the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, about 62 kilometers east of the capital London, shortly after 12.05 local time (13.05 CET). Police said they detained a 25-year-old man on suspicion of murder after the attack on the spot. “He is currently in custody and we are not looking for anyone else in the case,” it is stated in a statement by the police from the English county of Essex.

The injured MP was treated on the spot, but eventually succumbed to his injuries. Police have not yet confirmed the man’s identity. The motive for the attack was not immediately known.

Amess, 69, has been a member of the British Parliament for Southend West since 1997. He has been a member of parliament since 1983. According to Sky News, an unknown assailant came to the aforementioned meeting with his constituents in the church, and Amessa stabbed several times.

Violence against British politicians is rare. In June 2016, during the campaign before the Brexit referendum, the attacker shot and subsequently stabbed Labor MP Jo Cox. The far-right extremist was given a life sentence for his politically motivated assassination, the AP added.
