Nikolas Cruz would plead guilty to the Parkland massacre

(CNN) – Nikolas Cruz intends to plead guilty to charges stemming from the 2018 murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, his attorney revealed in Florida court on Friday.

Cruz is currently charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder in the Parkland, Florida incident.

Cruz did plead guilty to charges related to a 2018 jail robbery during Friday’s hearing.

Cruz stood at a podium and spoke to the judge, saying he understood the four charges against him for the jail robbery. Cruz said he was “feeling good.”

During a series of brief questions from the judge, Cruz responded with brief answers, stating his name, age and medical history.

Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer read all four charges against her: attempted aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer, depriving an officer of means of protection, and use of a self-defense weapon against a law enforcement officer. Cruz responded “guilty” to each count.

His attorney, David Wheeler, said Cruz will also plead guilty to charges stemming from the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer set a plea hearing change for that on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m.

Cruz had previously pleaded not guilty in the shooting case, although his lawyers had indicated that he would plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence without the possibility of parole, CNN previously reported. Prosecutors had said they were seeking the death penalty.
