Explosions at a Shiite mosque in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar have claimed at least 32 people and injured 53. This emerges from new information from the AFP agency, which refers to Afghan medical sources. According to the Afghan authorities, the number of victims is likely to increase further.

An eyewitness told AFP that he had heard three explosions – at the main entrance to the mosque, in its southern part and at the place where the faithful washed. According to an AFP journalist, the mosque was full at the time of the explosion. At least 15 ambulances reportedly came to the scene after the explosion.

“We are saddened to learn that a Shiite mosque in Kandahar has exploded, killing and injuring many of our compatriots,” a spokesman for the Interior Ministry said on Twitter.

“Special forces in the Islamic Emirate (Afghanistan) have come to the fore to determine the nature of the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he added.

The cause of the attack was not immediately known.

The bloody incident took place just a week after a suicide attack in the city of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan, which was joined by the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) jihadist organization and killed 72 people, according to Al Jazeera’s news website. At least 140 other people were injured.
