Slovakia finally has a candidate: See which film fights for the Oscars! | Telkáč.sk – Telkáč.sk

10/15/2021Interesting factsThe Slovak national candidate for the award of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the category of the best international feature film is the film by director Petr Kerekes Cenzorek. The Slovak Film and Television Academy (SFTA) decided on the nomination. PR manager Radomír Brhlík informed about it.

“We very much appreciate the courage of SFTA members to choose our film about the power of motherhood behind the walls of the Ukrainian prison and to be able to support the growth of our cinema beyond the mental boundaries of our local themes,” commented on the decision of academics Peter Kerekes and the author of the theme, co-writer and producer Ivan Ostrochovský.

This year, SFTA members selected from six submitted films that met the criteria. Martin Šulík’s Man with Rabbit Ears, On the Marks, also met among the pictures. Mária Pinčíková, White on White by Viera Čákanyová, Love Under the Hood of Mira Remo and the work of Vera Lacková How I Became a Partisan. The censor tells the story of one of the outgoing women’s prisons, in which Kerekes and Ostrochovsky spent six years visiting and filming. Most of the protagonists in the film play out their true story.

The censor has already received an award during its implementation

Brhlík further reminded that Cenzorka already won the Works in Progress award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2017, and a year later she won as the Best Project at the Odessa IFF. It had its world premiere last month at the Venice Film Festival, where its creators received the Best Screenplay Award. Slovak film won the Venice Award for the first time in the history of modern Slovak cinema. Kerekes’ film is also the first Slovak feature film to be officially selected for the Orizzonti competition section. He applied for the prizes at the 78th year of the world’s oldest film festival in competition with 18 films.

Peter Kerekes gained international attention in 2003 with his feature-length documentary debut 66 Seasons, which became a festival hit and won several awards. His next documentary, How History Varies (2009), was nominated for a Prix Arte at the European Film Awards. The film Velvet Terrorists (2013), co-directed by Pavol Pekarčík and Ivan Ostrochovský, won the Fedeora Award at the Karlovy Vary IFF and had its international premiere in the Forum section at the Berlinale, where it won the Tagesspiegel Readers’ Award. The Oscar ceremony will take place on March 27, 2022. A shortlist of nominations will be published on December 21, and the nominations themselves will be known on February 8, 2022.
