STOCKHOLM – Ten days ago it celebrated its 29th birthday and everything indicated that on October 23 it will start its 14th season in the World Cup. However, the Swedish slalom skier Emelie Wikström surprisingly decided to hang the skis definitely on the nail.

In an emotional post on a social network, the native of Jönköping explained why she ended her career just less than two weeks before the start of the new season, which will also be spiced up by the Beijing Olympics.

“I’ve been struggling with my mental health lately with this lifestyle. I’ve always said, ‘As long as I love it, and I think it’s fun, I’ll keep going.’ It’s not like that anymore, and I’m sorry.” wrote Wikström, who made her World Cup debut in January 2009 at the German resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Although the sympathetic blonde did not belong to the absolute slalom elite, she achieved several excellent successes during her career. She finished sixth in the slalom at the Olympics in Sochi, and twelve four years later. She recorded her life result in 2017, when at the World Championships in St. Moritzi won a bronze medal in the team competition.

Blood, tears and laughter

“Many of you see all the positives, but there’s a lot of hard work behind it. Traveling more than 200 days a year, blood, tears and laughter! I’ve learned more than I could ever imagine, and much more than just skiing. “I decided to start a new chapter and I have 1000 nice memories,” said a member of the IFK Sävsjö club, who finished 25th in the slalom season in the rope season.

The new edition of the World Cup starts in eleven days with the traditional giant slalom in Sölden, Austria, but we will not see Emelia Wikström again at the start. “I may have been ‘Emelie’s skier’ to many of you, but I hope most of you will remember me for other reasons. I’m Emelie with skis on my feet, but without them.” added Swedish slalom skier.
