OSIJEK – The president of the Slovak Football Association Ján Kováčik expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the national team in the qualification for the World Cup 2022. After Monday’s draw 2: 2 in Croatia, she lost the theoretical hope to fight for the championship in Qatar, which the head of the association considers disappointing. At the same time, he noted that the fate of the head coach Štefan Tarkovič will be decided only after the end of the current qualification cycle.

The World Cup qualification will fail for the Slovak team, regardless of the results in the final November double match at home with Slovenia and Malta. According to Kováčik, even the improved performance of the team in the autumn part is not a reason for satisfaction.

“I have good feelings about the performances in the matches against Russia and Croatia, just as they were good even after the September crash. However, we did not get any points and since football is not figure skating and the result is played, on the one hand disappointment, “ remarked Kováčik, according to whom the Slovaks had to end up in at least second place in the H-group. “So I consider it a failure.”

Kováčik does not think that Slovakia “lost” the qualification at the start, when in Cyprus, even in shock, it only drew at home with Malta. “We still had a chance in September. I think if we beat Slovenia and at least played a point with Croatia, which we were very close to, plus we would have played a good result in Russia, there would still be something to play for today.”

However, the Slovaks did not save the already lost qualification from Osijek, so they were at least a little pleased with the words of appreciation. “We heard the words of the award from the Croats. They said that our performance was excellent in Russia as well. It will please for thirty seconds, but it is not very valid,” added Kováčik.

What about coach Tarkovic?

Coach Tarkovič’s contract expires at the end of the year, and Kováčik said after the match in Croatia that after the end of the qualification they would analyze his work on the bench. “You don’t want me to evaluate the year of coach Tarkovich’s work after the match now. We will do it after the qualification. It will be complex. Even after EURO 2020, we made conclusions that became clear in September. We will do the same after this qualification.” added Kováčik.
