(CNN) – The archbishop of Toledo in Spain apologized after two artists filmed a daring music video in the city’s cathedral, saying he was completely unaware of the project and its content.
The Spanish artist C. Tangana and the Argentine singer Nathy Peluso recorded parts of the video for their song “Atheist“in the 13th century Toledo Cathedral, one of the most famous religious buildings in Spain.
The video, released Thursday, shows C. Tangana and Peluso fighting and dancing bachata in the cathedral and includes close-ups of the artwork on the cathedral walls.
“The Archbishop deeply regrets these events and disapproves of the images recorded in the first temple of the Archdiocese,” said a statement issued Friday by the Archdiocese on behalf of Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves.
“We humbly and sincerely ask for forgiveness to all the lay faithful, consecrated persons and priests, who have felt justly hurt by this improper use of a sacred place,” the statement added.
The lyrics of the song include a chorus of “I was an atheist, but now I believe because a miracle like you had to come down from heaven”, while the first verse apologizes to the Virgen de la Almudena for what “I do in your bed”.
Elsewhere in the video, Peluso is shown naked and partially pixelated holding Tangana’s decapitated head, and at the end of the song, the two singers pose for a photo with priests and choir children outside the cathedral.
Tangana also tugs on Peluso’s hair in an echo of one of the paintings inside the cathedral, which shows a demon pulling a woman’s hair to prevent her from reaching salvation at the Last Judgment. Painting is also used as song art.
Although the archbishop promised to “review the procedure followed to prevent something similar from happening again,” the dean offered a very different statement. it’s a statement also issued on Friday.
Arguing that the song “presents the story of a conversion through human love,” Dean Juan Miguel Ferrer Grenesche said that the final scenes of the video where the singers pose for a photo show the “understanding and acceptance of the Church.”
Although he recognized the “provocative visual language” used, he defended the decision to allow filming in the cathedral, saying that “the purpose has been exclusively to promote dialogue with contemporary culture, always preserving the faith of the Church.”
Ferrer also said that the song could “is a language of the culture of our time and the good that it can produce in those far away has been attended to,” but he apologized to those who had been injured by it.
As of Saturday, the music video had nearly 3 million views on YouTube.
