Making a movie or series is never easy. Actors often have to drastically change their appearance, weight, learn new skills and suffer a lot of pain to play their role according to the director’s ideas. However, even the director does not have it easy, it can really take a person to turn an idea into a serial reality. Proof of this is the filming of the Squid Game series.

Why did the series get the name Squid game?

The Squid Game series, one of the latest hits on Netflix, has won crowds of fans. If you’ve seen it, you know that children’s games, such as tug-of-war, can suddenly take on a completely different meaning than we’re used to. As for the portal CNN admitted the South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk, even for him, such games were a common part of childhood. Everyone has been guessing at least a moment about such simple pastimes.

One of the games that Hwang played as a child was a game called Squid game. It was a team game whose rules were simple, a group of players (attackers) tried to push through an area that was shaped like an octopus. The task of the defenders was to protect their territory at all costs. According to Hwang, it was a physically challenging game. Each time they played it, several children ended up with torn clothes and crying. That’s why it was mostly a game they played until the end of the day.

When Hwang started working on the Squid game, he wondered what it would be like for adults to return to such children’s games. The answer to the question of how the director imagines it can be found in the series itself. People drowning in debt play children’s games, but they have a taste of death. It seems that people are fascinated by this theme, because in 90 countries around the world, the series has occupied the first places in the audience since its premiere.

It is even possible that it will rank among the best series that Netflix has ever broadcast. But what did Hwang really want to tell the story? In addition to games, he also thought about how competitive the company was during the creation. Everyone would like to have a more expensive car and a bigger house than their neighbor. However, not everyone achieves something like this, according to the director, many people are among the poor who do not manage as everyday duties. While the winners are constantly advancing, the “losers” are lagging behind more and more.

For the director, however, it is also a personal story. Two of the main characters, Seong Gi-hun a Cho Sang-woo they are named after his old friends. He calls them his inner clones, which are supposed to represent two aspects of his personality. For example, Gi-hun was raised by a single mother and always had financial problems while Sang-woo attended a prestigious university and was praised by those around him. However, they placed high demands on him, which was not always easy to manage, and so it was with Hwang.

The creation of the series itself was extremely demanding for him, due to stress he even lost 6 teeth during filming. Nevertheless, he plays with the idea that he would embark on the second series. On the one hand, the thought of it is scary for Hwang, but he is motivated by the thought of how many fans the first series has gained around the world. So we have nothing left but to be surprised.
