The Sauvé commission published on Tuesday, October 5, a damning report in which 330,000 victims of sexual abuse were identified in theChurch. The 20 Hours teams went to meet a man raped by his priest, who was also his uncle.
Now 40 years old, Arnaud Gallais wanted to erase all traces of his past. In front of his primary school, memories come back to him. “I often have trouble remembering my childhood, but there, I remember the courtyard where we played palm“, he remembers with difficulty. From the age of 8 to 11, Arnaud Gallet accuses his uncle and priest for having violated him. This uncle shared Arnaud’s room when he was a child.
Obviously still very affected, Arnaud Gallais remembers how his great-uncle concealed his crime. “He presented it as a discovery of my body. Very quickly, from this discovery of the body (…) it deviated from sexual assault and rape“, he confides. The perpetrator is deceased, however, the priest’s brother admitted the facts through a covered word letter. “I was really saddened to learn that Rémy, my brother, had caused you harm from which you still suffer now. So I ask your forgiveness from the bottom of my heart“, he reads sadly. The Sauvé commission reported the facts to the prosecution in order to establish possible complicity at the time.
