(CNN Spanish) – If something has caught my attention in the spring-summer 2022 fashion collections, presented in New York, London, Milan and Paris, it is the relevance of its strong shoulders and large sleeves. A feminist message? Maybe. Support for the strength of women? Or a simple return to the fashion of the eighties and its powerful shoulders?
I don’t know, but it is – without a doubt – something that we can keep in mind when choosing new purchases and organizing the wardrobe for the heat of next year. And a blouse with beautiful and “inflated” sleeves, like lace balloons, or with a feminine embroidered strip or eyelet, will be very 2022. And if it is in white, much better! Ideal with a classic black trousers – or a white one with a good fabric and cut – it will be a perfect look. Superchic.
I remember when Carolina Herrera and the great French designer Claude Montana launched their “powerful shoulders” in the eighties. And when Carolina was called by the important fashion magazine W as Our Lady of the Sleeves. She herself explained to me then (and more than once over the years) the importance of well-defined shoulders and fabulous sleeves because “they were the ideal frame for a woman’s face.” And now – in 2022 – the trend is back again! I always tell them: fashion is like a cachumbambé, which comes and goes, and rises and falls, at will.
In the new 2022 collections, Saint Laurent offers powerful shoulders in their blazers (super strong!). Valentino launched some very 1980s white blouses. Dolce & Gabbana designed blazers with sharp, well-defined shoulders. Balenciaga designed overly exaggerated shoulders. Wes Gordon, for Carolina Herrera, presented blouses with very impressive sleeves. So did Bibhu Mohapatra. Oscar de la Renta’s brand, dresses and tops with feminine large puffed sleeves. And even a new designer, the Colombian Goretty Medina, has divine embroidered strap blouses with large sleeves.
In short: We have a few months to plan and organize our look for spring and summer 2022, and the addition of a piece with powerful and well marked shoulders or voluminous and beautiful sleeves will modernize your image 100% in a two-for-three! Although he always remembers that, as Carolina Herrera has always told me, “everything must always maintain the correct proportion with our height and silhouette”.
